The Heart Sofa

Designed by

Nanna and Jørgen Ditzel

1949

The Heart sofa is almost a sculpture that shapes itself around the body. It is thinly upholstered and though upholstery was a complicated matter at the time, Jørgen Ditzel, who was trained in the art, worked magic with the construction to make it work. The year 1949 was a landmark year for Nanna and Jørgen Ditzel. They became aware of their urge to think originally and for themselves, to create new forms, and to work sculpturally for the sake of the body's greater freedom of movement. This was a completely different way of thinking than that of the Klint-influenced school of design that had characterized their education. Manufactured by Knud Willadsen and shown at The Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibition, 1949.
